Coat of Arms of Mauritius

The Coat of arms of Mauritius are stipulated in the "Mauritius Laws 1990 Vol.2 SCHEDULE (Section 2)". The coat of arms was granted on 25 August 1906, and depicts various attributes of the island.

The shield:
    In the first quarter, a ship symbolizes colonization.
    In the second quarter, three palm trees represent the country’s tropical vegetation.
    In the lower right quarter is a key.
    On the left-hand side is a white star, which are referred to in the Latin motto «Stella Clavisque Maris Indici» («The Star and the Key of the Indian Ocean»).



    The supporters are
    1. On the dexter side, a dodo per bend sinister embattled gules and argent, and
    2. On the sinister side, a sambur deer per bend embattled argent and gules, each supporting a sugar cane,the island’s staple crop, erect proper.
    The colors represent:
    • Red reflects independence
    • Blue for the color of the Indian Ocean
    • Yellow symbolizes a bright future
    • Green represents the lush vegetation of the island.
